Nathan MerkleNorthern CA Lakes Vice President
Nathan Merkle
I have worked in the marina and recreation industry for the last six years. I served as the marina manager at Monterey Lakes Recreation Company from May 2012 until July 10th 2018, at which point I was promoted to general manager. Monterey Lakes Recreation Company, a subsidiary of The California Parks Company, manages the Resort operations at Lake Nacimiento and Lake San Antonio, including two inland lake marinas. These two resorts employ between 50 and 150 employees seasonally, depending on business conditions. My predecessor, Mark Sandoval, current President of the MRA, took me under his wing and educated me on many aspects of resort and marina operations as well as the industry as a whole. Working under Mark for the last 5 years has been truly enlightening. On a personal note, I have been recreationally boating on inland lakes since I was 8 years old and am a proud boat owner and watersport enthusiast. I live on the shoreline of Lake Nacimiento and my boat can be seen on my private dock or at the resort marina nearly year round. I have seen first-hand the decline in the boating industry within my generation and hope to provide insight and introduce more Millennials to the wonders of boating.

Ty OlsenTy Olsen

I have been managing marinas at Private Clubs since 1994. In the years that I have been in the industry, I have been involved in two full marina redevelopments, 3 major dredging projects, deeply involved with the TMDL Program, since 2001 in both Los Angeles and San Diego, implemented numerous new policies for the different establishments that I have worked with and have served on several Boards at the various Clubs to implement new policies that not only deal with the financial aspects, but community and environmental as well. I have had one of our Clubs certified as a Clean Marina, and am currently working on having my current Club recertified.

My first job working in a marina was in 1991 at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club. After completing college at UCSB, I accepted a position as the Assistant Dockmaster at the California Yacht Club, where shortly after, I was offered the position of the Head Dockmaster. In late 1999, I was offered the Dockmaster position down in San Diego at the Kona Kai Resort. After 2 years at the Club, I took over the operations of the Kona Kai Club as well as maintaining the marina operations. In approximately 2006, the property was sold and all off the executive staff was released. I then accepted a consulting position at the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club to work with them on a consulting basis for redeveloping their marina. Shortly after, I accepted a position as the Director for Business Development for a startup company, which I gained a great amount of experience and knowledge. It was not long after that I received a call from the owners of the California Yacht Club offering me a position back at the Club as the Dockmaster. I accepted the position, and after nearly 7 years back at CYC, I was contacted by the San Diego Yacht Club. I moved to San Diego in 2015 as their new Dockmaster, and currently sit on the Port Captains Committee and work closely with both the Facilities Committee, Finance Committee and Board of Directors. In the over 20 years that I have been in the industry, I have implemented numerous new policies, programs and have far exceeded financial expectations on an annual basis, worked closely with local law enforcements, governmental agencies and helped enforce laws.
